Hypermobile? This is Why Your Voice Feels Dry

Did you know that hypermobility is much more common in neurodivergent folks that in neuotypicals?

And, hypermobile people often struggle with hydration, which is very challenging for singers and speakers! Because overly-elastic blood vessels can cause blood to pool in the lower extremities and even abdomen, the kidneys get a bit confused and falsely register "too much water in the body" - and then proceed to flush it out!

Additionally, hypermobile people tend to miss thirst signals, and may experience frequent urination. Essentially, the body is doing all it can to get rid of water, while your tissues are becoming more dehydrated.

All this adds up to vocal cords that may chronically feel dry.

What's a hypermobile singer to do?

1. Get in the habit of drinking water slowly throughout the day. Sip, don't chug!

2. Drink hydrating herbal infusions like marshmallow and/or aloe rather than plain water.

3. Put electrolytes in your water to keep your body balanced and hydrated.

4. Use a saline nebulizer before gigs and at set breaks to deliver direct hydration to your vocal cords.

If you would like more ideas on how to stay hydrated as a hypermobile singer, check out this video on my YouTube that is a deeper dive into the subject.

~~~Please keep in mind: autoimmune conditions are more common in neurodivergent people, and Sjogren’s could be the cause of excessive dry throat. Please talk to your health care provider to rule out autoimmune issues. This blog is NOT medical advice and is not a substitute for proper medical care from a health provider.
