Stretches for Singers and Speakers
If I had a dime for every time a few simple stretches gave one of my students a mini breakthrough, well, I’d have a LOT of dimes!
Stretching and softening the muscles that support the larynx as well as the head can free up the voice in very noticeable ways. If you are already one of my students, you will find that stretching and working with the breath are the first steps I share in my How to Practice Guide.
Constantly looking down while holding the head forward puts tremendous pressure on the cervical vertebrae and the muscles that support the head and larynx.
We spend so much time checking our phones and using our computers that the neck muscles have a LOT of work to do in correcting forward head posture, slouching, and other postural issues. So, it’s critically important for speakers and singers to stretch regularly for better vocal health.
In this quick video, you can follow along with a series of stretches that will help release tension from the muscle groups that most directly impact your voice.
If you’ve been searching for a way to help release tongue tension, stretches for a tight SCM muscle or tension in the platysma (the wide flat muscle in the front of your neck), then this video will help. These stretches also help drain lymph congestion in the face and neck, creating more freedom and space for the voice.
This is a great warm up to use before speaking or singing gigs, and is useful as a daily practice to keep your vocal mechanism in a healthy state free of pain and tension.
